Can’t Lose Bowhunting

by Jeremy Johnson (Author)

Can’t Lose Bowhunting by Jeremy Johnson is a comprehensive guide to becoming a more knowledgeable, confident, and effective bowhunter before, during, and after the shot.

The book grew from a common problem among bowhunters: making a shot but failing to recover the animal. Johnson examines why these situations occur and what hunters can do to improve shot preparation, equipment performance, tracking, recovery, and ethical decision-making.

Rather than focusing only on target accuracy, Can’t Lose Bowhunting covers the complete process of preparing for a successful hunt, from equipment selection and shooting performance to blood trailing, field care, and getting game out of the woods.

Prepare for the Moment of Truth

Accurate target shooting does not always translate to consistent performance in the field. Excitement, pressure, awkward positions, limited shooting opportunities, and animal movement can all affect a shot.

Johnson discusses strategies for controlling buck fever and target panic, building confidence, maintaining proper form, and making sound decisions under pressure. The book also explains how to develop a backup plan when an arrow does not hit exactly as intended.

Understand Bowhunting Effectiveness

Johnson examines bowhunting from both mechanical and medical perspectives, explaining how shot placement, penetration, broadhead performance, and arrow construction can influence the outcome.

The book also explores arrow and broadhead physics, including research associated with Dr. Ed Ashby. Readers can use this information to make more informed equipment choices rather than relying solely on advertising or speed ratings.

Special attention is given to hunters with shorter draw lengths or lower draw weights, including ways to improve penetration through appropriate arrow and broadhead selection.

Make Your Bow Hunt Ready

A hunting setup must perform reliably under real field conditions. Johnson walks readers through preparing a bow and arrow system for hunting, including equipment setup, shot reliability, penetration, broadhead performance, and overall system effectiveness.

The goal is to enter the field with equipment that the hunter understands, trusts, and has properly prepared.

Blood Trailing and Animal Recovery

Animal recovery is one of the book's central subjects. Johnson explains how blood trails are created, why different wounds produce different signs, and how an animal's behavior can change after being hit.

Readers learn about tracking wounded game, interpreting blood and other evidence, avoiding common recovery mistakes, and making better decisions about when and how to begin trailing.

Research and Field Experience

Johnson spent approximately four years developing Can’t Lose Bowhunting, drawing on historical bowhunting knowledge, technical research, and practical field experience.

Written in a direct and understandable style, the book connects technical information with real hunting situations. It is designed to help readers apply what they learn rather than simply memorize information.

For New and Experienced Bowhunters

New bowhunters can use the book to develop a foundation in equipment, shooting, tracking, recovery, and ethical hunting practices. Experienced hunters can use it to evaluate established habits, improve equipment performance, and prepare for challenging shot and recovery situations.

Can’t Lose Bowhunting is a practical resource for anyone interested in bowhunting accuracy, arrow and broadhead performance, blood tracking, ethical animal recovery, and becoming a more capable and prepared hunter.
