Camping Grounds

by Phoebe S. K. Young (Author)

Camping Grounds explores the complex and often overlooked history of camping in American life. While camping is commonly viewed as a recreational escape, Phoebe S.K. Young reveals how sleeping outdoors has also been connected to survival, displacement, political protest, and questions of national identity.

At first glance, camping seems simple. Families and friends pack their vehicles, reserve a campsite, pitch a tent, build a fire, and spend a few nights beneath the stars. Yet the familiar traditions of picnic tables, sleeping bags, campfires, and marshmallows are only one part of a much larger story.

Young examines why some Americans choose to sleep outside for pleasure while others have been forced to live outdoors because of poverty, war, migration, or a lack of shelter. She also considers how tents and temporary camps have been used as tools of political organization and public protest.

By tracing the development of camping from the Civil War era through the twenty-first century, the book shows how recreational camping became a celebrated American ideal while other forms of outdoor living were frequently ignored, criticized, or misunderstood.

Drawing on extensive historical research, Camping Grounds connects the experiences of Civil War veterans, African American freedpeople, Indigenous communities, migrant workers, tramps, and early outdoor enthusiasts. It also explores the influence of figures such as John Muir and the rise of leisure camping during the nineteenth century.

The story continues through the twentieth century with automobile tourists, federal campground planners, Depression-era transients, family vacationers, backpackers, and political activists. In the twenty-first century, Young examines both the growing crisis of unsheltered homelessness and the tent-based encampments associated with the Occupy movement.

Together, these histories reveal that camping has never been only about recreation. Americans have used camps to seek freedom, meet practical needs, build communities, protest injustice, and claim a place within the nation. Camping Grounds offers a thought-provoking look at how outdoor spaces shape our relationships with nature, public life, and one another.
