His story begins at age ten, when he dreamed of living as a mountain man, and continues into adulthood as a thirty-seven-year-old father living in Brooklyn and traveling to some of North America’s most remote landscapes.
Throughout the book, Rinella recounts the experiences that shaped him as a hunter and outdoorsman. He describes attempting to make a living as a fur trapper while the fur market was declining, exploring the world of catch-and-release steelhead fishing, and canoeing through the Missouri Breaks in search of mule deer as the Missouri River began freezing in November. He also shares the challenges of pursuing elusive Dall sheep among the rugged, glacier-covered mountains of Alaska.

Steven Rinella is an outdoorsman, author, wild-game chef, and television and podcast personality known for making hunting and conservation subjects accessible to a broad audience.
He is the host of the television series and podcast MeatEater and the author of Meat Eater: Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter, American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon, The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine, and the two-volume series The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game.
